Facial Contouring & Jaw Surgery

What is facial contouring and jaw surgery?

Facial contouring covers a range of procedures that reshape the structure of the face — particularly the jaw, chin, and cheeks — to improve facial balance, symmetry, and definition. These procedures can be purely aesthetic or address functional concerns like bite alignment, and range from minimally invasive treatments to more involved surgical reshaping of bone and tissue. The goal is to create a smoother, more balanced, often more “V-line” or oval facial shape — used both for aesthetic refinement and, in some cases, to correct functional bite or jaw alignment issues.

Key tradeoff

It is one of the more invasive cosmetic procedures (bone-cutting near nerves), with longer recovery (months) and higher technical risk than soft-tissue procedures — so it requires an experienced maxillofacial / craniofacial surgeon.

Facial Contouring Benefits

Slims a wide or square-looking lower face by reducing jaw angle / bone width

Reduces a prominent or protruding chin, or builds out a weak / receding chin (genioplasty)

Softens an overly masculine or bulky jawline for a more refined, V-line look

Corrects facial asymmetry between the left and right sides

Reduces cheekbone (zygoma) prominence for a less wide, more oval-shaped face

Improves overall facial proportion and balance between the upper, mid, and lower thirds

Smooths a “double chin” or jowl appearance when paired with submental liposuction or jaw reduction

Jaw Surgery Benefits

Corrects bite misalignment (malocclusion) when combined with orthognathic surgery

Improves chewing function in cases of jaw asymmetry or skeletal discrepancy

Can improve speech clarity affected by severe jaw misalignment

Helps with sleep apnea in cases where jaw advancement increases airway space

Reduces jaw-joint (TMJ) strain in some cases where bite correction relieves pressure

Risks & considerations to balance the benefits

⚠️

Among the more invasive and higher-risk cosmetic procedures — involves bone cutting near nerves (risk of numbness / nerve damage, especially to the inferior alveolar nerve).

⚠️

Longer recovery than soft-tissue procedures — significant swelling for weeks; final results can take 3–6 months.

⚠️

Requires a highly experienced maxillofacial or craniofacial surgeon given proximity to nerves, teeth roots, and major blood vessels.

⚠️

Risk of asymmetry, contour irregularity, or unsatisfactory results requiring revision.

⚠️

Combined jaw + chin + cheek procedures increase complexity and recovery time significantly.

⚠️

For functional / orthognathic cases, often requires pre- and post-surgical orthodontics (braces) over a year or more.
